Rio Santa, 45 km S. Huaras, a
"fiesta patronal" in progress. Then up Rio Santa, and
near Catac,
soon after crossing river (going E.) passed through rolling dry
grew 2 flechas.
lunchgrass lands w. occasional rock walls. A herder said
perdiceros (tinamours) present on slopes, + that many trout
of small size in rivers (looker like area of Crucero in Dept. Peru).
Camped by rock walls and lunchgrass; in area local Indian
called "Rochacoca". Drew a few km. toward peaks to E.
120x250 and 120x400 meters in size.
and came to 2 lakes, about 200 and 600 yds. long. On
smaller were teal, coots, and crested ducks. Teal with
5+ juvs. (coll. 07 and juv.). Also some shore birds. Lake
also called "Tapara" or similar name. Located in rolling
grasslands w. rare pastoral habitations. Also Andean gullle
(old nest on rocks in lake), grebes, and ibis. Rochacoca is near
km 394 (fr. Lima), about 25 km. from Recuay by road. I
set 25 traps by rock walls in side. Local man said tinamours
present, but we saw none.
Upper Rio Santa, 11000', Dpt. Ancash
15 September 1967. My traps held 10 Nesperanys (?), one
Alaska lishinoma (discarded), and a smaller mouse (catolog).
I hunted ichne and shot a Nathopostia (apparently N.
oroto bruehli, known only to Junein). Local man said
vicuñer in Cordillera Blanca to E., + that road headed that way
from me. a bridge a few km. to N. of our camps. We drew on
up Rio Santa thru sparsely inhabited grasslands, + saw
rolling
occasional large white goose (Chloephaga). Reached Lake Coro-
cocha, 4000 m., 33 km. from last camp, 82 km. from
Huaras; again said 31 to Chiquian, 132 to Patavica. (Our
camps had been 15 km. N. of a bridge across Rio Santa). The lake
