Koford Journal 12 September 1967. Callan, 13000 ft. Opt. Across rocky canyon. Departed 1500 and drove up to Callan (16 km. from camp, 121 km. from Cosum), where we camped about 1 km. W. of summit near a small slow stream & rock formation. Saw furish coster, john grass. Saw lopewings, cerloto. Frogs in stream. I set 35 traps near john & grass, near stream and up open slopes. No people or livestock seen this high. Cold night - water froze. Checked traps evening & flushed hummingbird from had a few P. pictus by 9 p.m. hole in cliff at night. 13 September 1967. My catch comprised 8. Phyllosticta pictus, 5 smaller Phyllosticta, 1 Alacran, and an Oryzoryza. It was 30 F. in car last night & 3 of 4 Marmosa held in livestock died. (Even on warm nights usually cold and slow moving). Saw lopewings & collected one, over green stream area. We put up specimens, then drove over crest and down toward Huaron. Dry & barren in upper lands, but was cultivation and increasing eucalyptus plant-wigs as descended. Huaron, tile-roofs conspicuous, & snow + ice peaks above. Many Americans there - Peace Corps? - and good "queso mantecoso." Rest supplies & drove 5. through much wilds area near Pista. 22 km by road beyond Huaron. Rain in afternoon. Camped, about 5 km. before reaching Peruay, in area shrubs, grass, and occasional shoulders. I set 10 snap traps near road culvert + bushes 20 km S. Huaron, 10000 ft. in evening, and 12 was near shrubs or stone after rain stopped, about 1 a.m. (14 Sept.) 14 13 September 1967. Total catch was 10 mice, mostly a Phyllosticta (or CBK 324).
