Dato. Amazonas, Peru
26-28 August 1967
5 Km N 5 Km E of Panacochas,
and saw squirrel (?) on ground. Early morning heard Nyctibiu (?)
calling 'stringy wooceoo', about 1 octave range in 2-3 sec.
Also heard owls, but at night found only caprimulgids, & these on
open ground. Saw occasional green toucan (Hamilton collection).
I drove 10 +/- km. E., past small squirrel, until I saw
open valley beyond (no fruit) with roadvaler settlement.
Little agricultural use of this area; few local crops. We collected
3 specimens of a refours crested eatinga (amphin?), which perched
in open near treetops in opened forest. Heard checkleess in
humid forest. Locals said "paso de matil" present. Woodcups ran.
29 August 1967. We drove up to foot of Lake Panacochas,
about 15 km. by road and 600' above level of our camp. Photosd
lake. Not few waterbirds seen. Rock walled pasture and
forest patches in surrounding hills. Town quiet, undeveloped,
rather primitive. Drove back toward Bagua. From Panacochas
about 35 km. to bridge over Utcubamba (Agrio?),
and 100 km. to Bagua Grande. Crossed Rio Maranon, then
drew up about 35 km. up Rio Chavaya to Rio Chemchuca,
(Pte.Chunchuca to Chuntali)
clear tributary with new road alongside. Drove up
(2)
this a few km., camped in dry-looking broadleaf forest,
and set out bat net-traps Artillery, under oak-like canopy.
(Downing)
(16 km. from camp)
30 August 1967. Some rain night. Drove back thru Picara
(24 Km. fr. Picara) (27Km. from Pecara)
and El Chavala to El Tambo; then to our former camp
at Hualapampa, 4000 ft. Set up bat nets and made
good catch of at least 4 species. I set 17 trap
traps near mosquito tree and roler on dry slope.
