19 August
18 September 1967 El Areval, Dpto. Cajamarca, Peru
Days found for us a green "camelón" in a mesquite tree (Huey et alq). We stayed on until morning of -
20 August 1967. Took down nets and started on toward Rio Marañon. Stopped in area cactus, roble, and spiny trees to collect green Jays and lorix ants. Then on and canget
bug stream entering Rio Chancaya, where I set up a few traps
and loays put up bot net. Several mice caught in bushes
in this rather humid area in evening (CSK 3190 - 3192). --
21 August 1967. Drove or downstream to bridge over Rio Mar-
arán at point where country dry w. much mesquite in near
river. Bridge about km. 207 (from Olmos). Drove on to low
point in road, near clear (living?) stream through rod.-
wooded area, near tree cactus zone. Large trees + dense
vegetation than nearby. Camped and set up nets. Heard
caprimulgids and owls calling in evening, and shot
some at night. Fair variety of birds and bats, as we
stayed until August 23. One afternoon a group of kalpis
came + poled around, but caused no trouble.
23 August 1967. Drove to Bagua Grande on Rio Utcubamba,
19 km. from camp. Shortly before town stopped at H'cta.
Morilla, a huge cattle operation owned by Americo Ghini
(trained at UCLA). He was having much trouble with infect-
on of cattle wounds caused by vampires. This would
be good base for work in the region. Cattle are shipped to
Lima by truck for finishing off. Continued on 46 km.
beyond Bagua and camped on an abandoned sawmill site
near river. Set up one bot net.
