Koford 21 Journal 17 August 1967. Porculla Pass & down to E., Peru Stopping twice to collect before reaching Abra Porculla - alternate road 6700 at summit, when origin said 2144 m. Just over summit a square ridorso of pure grassland, but canyon descending to E. was rocky, dry, cauterizing: (Our camp last night was 1/6 km. before summit or road). Descended road through dry country with little life until reaching puddles of Huolapampa, where much gnat-mosquito in a broad wash. We camped about 2 km. from Huolapampa, at elev. about 4300 ft. Near camp were 50' cliffs full of holes & crevices. Holes contain hundreds of wasp-nests, & large corpse was at every tree. Also one cliff contains Desmodium. I shot 3 in eve- ning & saw 50+ in the cave, 20' in from entrance; Hamilton put up net & took a lot (prepared by CBK) of La Desmodium (colored). 18 August 1967. I shot an Anatinga, which had perched with another at cliff hole (but feets not large). There noisy at twiner. Possibly some birds feed on the wasps, which are numerous on cliff and trunks of some trees. We drove on damp dry work (occasional water) to edge of Rio Huancabamba, where we saw a cave entrance 100 yds. up a rocky slope. Ascended to cave and found 8+ small bats, which hung in low-roofed (& high too) dark rock chambers of tunnel about 10 yds. deep. Apparently thumbless ferret-tailed bats. Crossed bridge at El Tambo, in dry river valley. Then drove along river through 2 small towns, lay a new steel bridge, and to El Oronel. Here a flat dry river, with rocky brushy slopes to NE and much mosquito on flat. Set up bird/bat nets. Right-bats flying in eve- ning. Flocks of small doves rooted in mosquito. Local CBK nos 3178-3179. rocky
