C. Koford Journal Feb. 11, 1962 Kyoto, Japan M. fuscata and companion species. A few hundred feet up trail on 100' wide flat in open pine woods, free- ranging M. fusata. Since last December they remained near feeding ground (Nakajima seemed to be main student of this). He said moved more widely in spring or fall, befores and after birth season. Many cherry trees near and among pines; mostly hardwoods in nearby area where macaques secure naturally. Have too, people fed the animals, so very tame. But not obnoxious as at Takesabiyama - did not grab & deal w/ people; merely here. Many appears to have start of molt or cream (also at Takasaki). Mr. Jwata very much interested in his monkey. He is of breeding mfg. family. He treated me to lunch & later to few Shotosune (spell?) = make din- der (fish & vegit, boiled in portions on table). Stayed at Yoshikawa Inn (Japanese style, most unijzd). February 12, 1962. Went to Osaka airport and took CAT DC-6B for Formosa, with stop at Okinawa. Cloudy.. High swany mountains on Shibusu. Flew over Kyushu. Rice paddies, terraces, water buffalos, on Formosa. Taipei city but not tourist oriented. The peculiar outstanding feature. Buses and public buildings seedy. Overnight at airline expense; very good. Many U.S. military bases. February 13, 1962 Via CAT jet to Hong Kong. Stayed at Swanning House in Hong Kong. All quite modern, touristy, garish, and in English, though many touches of Chinese color (food, companions, dress.)
