Koford 18 Journal 9 August 1967 Peru. Hills to N of Anotape, Pto. Piura, went on E. to Los Baez. Saw redstart, vermillion flycatcher, small perote Damilton near house. (Bolshet a Coprinulgius near our campsite). We continued E. on barely passable road about 6 km. (15 from Panamericana highway), when we hit better road going N. Some Tillandsia soon after losing herdure stock. N. of our road the hills were covered w. granite boulders mixed with sparse costus th3 & brush. We camped in this area 4 days set snap traps [no catch]. Some birds collected including ant bird, & saw wood creeper, sparrow, vermillion dog flycatcher, oriole, hummingbird. Tillandsia growing on costus. A purple flowered stell a some tree (onomida). Granite boulders reddish and exfol- iating, as in Kentucky's Lenchuri area of Bongo Desert, Colf. Butes/selysana?) occasional, & 3 sparrow hawk. Common large (20) thr, mainly duffers, the primitive compound leaf, flets. perote about 2' long, & cut bark spider milk (Colo santo?). No night animals seen slept forage, in evening. 5E foot Co. Anotape 10 August 1967. The 3 boys picked up traps and then priced off granite (phyllocladus?) slopes slabs looking for geckhos - they found about 20 in 2-3 each of hours, and also 2 bats at 2 sites (3145-3148, C&K). We tried to cat nos. +, drive on E., but lost road after 3 km. so returned to good dirt road down brg. work 14 km (about 1/70') to highway, & on 11 km. to Tamarindo. Then to Sullana for supplies, and drove on 67 km. NE to Los Baez, near a dam (proved to be earth dam 6 km. from town, lake down down in rocky basin, w. few birds). Along this bird much greenery, and black carrizina, caracara, dove, oriole, saffron finches, & other birds. Country gradually more vegetated toward Los Baez but still became very dry w. dead- mouse shrubs and trees to 30'. Camped 5 km. beyond Los Baez. Many dry coarse herbs about 1'-2' high infected teredin slimes. Heard owl at night. I set 20 traps near rush in shrubs, rocks, and along stick fence. Saw almost no bats. [illegible]
