well at Monte Bojo Grande, a dry site. Huey and Hamilton
on had visited this Aug. 2, guided by local man, to see a bat
cave, and had caught one of 12+ bats seen. I visited the site on
August 3. It lay in bottom of draw among mud hills, nearly
bare, where a rock stratum ended and edge had faulted, leaving
block to close one side. Bats were visible by daylight about 12' in
and 6' above ground, all (I saw about 6-8) in one large groups. I
(CB&K no 3118)
netted 2 + later caught 2 more (so 5 taken of original gp.). Bats flew
(CB&K 3114, 3120)
out of cave, & some into 30' long recess about 1 1/2' high in back of
cave. Thinking more birds possibly present, I set net across canyon
a dozen yds. downstream. Bats emerged about 6:30 p.m., but
flew up & over ridge rather than down canyon (none got in
net overnight). These bats very long-winged (restor fuscus? - fed on
the red-flowered epiphyte?). This plant a favorite of humming-
birds and some other small birds. Grows near periphery of
cave fly 3 m.
foliage in clumps up to several feet across. Set out 4 nets
and took some Dorsal-gus. Too many goats & fleas for trapping.
at night in denser area large megachiro (in big coral) saw occasional
Caprimulgus (3123 CBK) + heard occasional owl. One early morning (Aug 4)
I saw eyeline up tree and shot a net (3122 CBK). We saw many bats but
could not catch few in nets. At night large bat (Desmodus?) sometimes
sled around walking man & seemed to respond to squeaks. The boys got some
tree squirrels in thick vegetation. Almost no birds in reproductive
condition, + no nesting evidence. Rains apparently rare & irregular.
Many white-winged dove rooted in mesquite + drank at water
trough near well (basket drawn). On 5 August we departed about
noon and drove back to Talara, where visited with Carlys, and
