Koford 1967 Journal 28 July 1967 Nr. Talara, Dpto. Piura, Peru. We drove on to Talara, a brick town built by Gut. Petroleum Co. Windy & sandy area, quite barren, with oil refinery by seashore. After some inquiries met Mr RS Carly, in charge of refinery. He had been here 11 yrs. Now only 42 Americans here. Carly had some interest in bird birds and told of some local spots in quebradas. He took us to one in Quebrada Honda, about 25 km. from Talara, and we camped there in 20 ft. mesquite trees at edge of dry wash. Some soft sandstone cliffs at edge work. Much better big goats & deer-ups, and many fox traces everywhere. Good variety of birds. I set 35 traps near edge washed near rock & mesquite. We saw a few larks but set up no nets. Fundo, Q. Honda, Dept. Piura, Peru 29 July 1967. Traps held 3 many being spring or pulled out by foxes. Some strings or tags chewed in two (big goats? foxes?). Bird collecting good and we took parrots, flycatchers, griseaters, wood creepers, wood-pickers, & others. Big todds and a Tropidurus present. In evening Ray found large geckos on tree trunks. Set up bird nets, which took 2 or few birds. In evening saw small bat (myotis?) flying low along mesquite, & took Desmodus and 2 other species (Chilobatrax) in nets. Less wind today. Fred McCollum collected a small owl. 30 July 1967. Put up larks & birds, then went to Talara to clean up and for repairs and supplies. Sunday. We talked with Mr Carly and saw (a radio ham) and stayed at the Puntas Areceras housing settlement, which was like U.S. Carly showed me another local area in Parivan quebradas, and area of sea caves near Moleza point. 31 July 1967. Slipped, & to Parivar (Mr. Nocente) when we camped among mesquite trees up to 30' tall, crowns closed in many parts. Fair variety of birds as at Fundo. We stayed until August 3 morning, when we moved up Quebrada Parivar 12 km. to area of a EWE of Talara, Dpt. Piura, Peru.
