C. Koford 8 Journal 11 February 1962 Kyoto, Japan year for study. We took bus (15 km.) to Aratayama, a monkey part park on a hill (again mostly pines, but cherry, oak, maple too, & they thought that few pines in the native habitat.) These monkeys, now 114 (Nohajima), perseverin ted since 1954. Births May to Aug., with 15 born 1961. about 14 sq. km. of forest, but monkeys in only a small part of this. The group at Inuyama started with 34 brought from Yakushima (S. Honshu) in 1957. First kept in small cage about 6 meter diam. Then in large, about 10 by 30 meter, for a period of months (?) before release. They did not know that the confinement was necessary to form a group. In sloping canyon was 80 meter diam. roughly circumference with sheet metal side 4-12' high (cyclone wires bottoms 2ft.) with electric wire on top. These had held about monkeys (now 23 ?) for 4 years. In 1961, 5 born about 15 born in all. 5 March to 28 July. One ad. 07, 5 ad. 44. A shed and refuement-eating stock inside pen. 20 small dead trees (to 10' tall), said to have been felled by monkeys. The caretaker had a notebook and had recorded daily observa- witins, totally contained obsers. He said the adult male did all the mating. One male had escaped by jumping 9' fence, without preliminary run. Malt relation seen 28 Aug. to 14 Mar. Most presently consorting with 1; some consort for several days with same q; other times with 3 (or more?) females in one day. No JMC men have studied here.
