Koford 6 Journal Peru 0 July 1967. Cosma - Near as road, Dept. Arecahu about 1 mi. before reaching 20' stream. Passed thru two small towns and camped Beyond Piscooto ---- on road! at narrowing of valley near stream at 3000' 52 km from Cosma. (?) Are myster in evening, to drivs & modals uncommon near road up. Clear sky, bright stars, & cool night. Set no traps - too late. To crest of Cordillera Negra 9 July 1967 Morning fog to about 300'. This area has large corn section for 5. widespread on rock slopes; shrubs, pepper trees; bananas, corn crops. Dense dry slopes to N. Departed 0800 and drove uphill toward Huaran. Piscooto 1360 m., small town. Adobe houses, corn crops, green valley. A further beyond we saw 50+ green & red large parrots in flocks 10-20, in avocados (?) tree and flying. Road went upstream. Stopped at about 4800' - slopes steep, cactus and rocks on dry grass slopes. Swifts flying (white area below). Pepper trees. Jointed cane growing near stream. At 6000' still much cultivation in bottom, 100-300 yds so. wide. Eucalyptus, pepper trees. 6000', green flat. A man with several 8" trout fishing. Many swifts. On up dirt road. At 9000' saw large green hummingbirds, some feeding on common red-flowered shrub. At 12000'; 2 juvenile sparrows hawks in hole in bank 20' above road; fully fledged. At about 12500, last barley fields. Summit 5 km beyond (120 from Cosma). Area short dry grass w. 13000' Cullen rock outcroppings. Could look down on Huaran to E., & up at the Cordillera Blanca, splendid line of 6000 m. icy peaks - we all took pics. Vomellus Ptiloscelys Saw lapwings in gp. 10+. Returned 5 km down road to 12500' when we camped in area grass, short brush & rock outcrops & walls. I set 35 traps upslope, Hurley & McCallum set nearer camps. Hemil- ton floored by the altitude, cold, & dryness. We all felt decidedly & a little dizzy when exerted. Heard food calling at night. 10 July 1967. Cold night but calm.
