Dep to Lining
Long de
Lining to Lachay, Peru.
7 July 1967. Fri.
Departed Lima 0230 in VW panel truck & drove north on Panamerican Highway to Longas de Lachay, 6 km. To E of him. 90 on highway. Found Huey,
Hamilton, + McCullum well with small collection birds + mice. They said Pyrocephalus just starting to breed, but Zosterops not, still in flood.
There Desirita, Speotyto among commonest birds. Foggy every day, + vegetation much beaten up by goats. They finished preparing specimens & packed, while I killed larks for 2 hrs. Uphill from house (at about 900') trees sparsely spaced, laden with Tillandsias and moss, so branches had clublike appearance - weird in fog. Many large boulins + rock antelope. (Huey had collected many geckos, Paul, Phyllodactylus, at night.) Little green herbage because of goats + lark pairs (late this year; should racing now) (Cartolan said driest Jan. - Feb.). Flushed from nest a mourning dove reijal dove.
It did distraction display, flopping, walking, to 100' away upslope. On stalk next 15' up was single spul, well feathered, light at medial bend wing (sd. no white in breast view; brown body, gray wings.)
Pyrocephalus - saw none of black phase, only red. Cops common in small eucalyptus stand near road on crest ridge, Lachay - I found 3 in lifting about 60 small rocks top rock walls, near or below level of house (900'). Saw 1 lutio reijal larkle. Barnant burnet common below 900'. Some in pairs. Some & months barrows on base hillsides. White areas head + back prominent. / Geospiza comm under rocks. Saw no ligands. Carotolan, Mantera, said vicuna present high up on dry side. Too much disturbance by dogs, people, goats, radios, domestic pigeons, etc. near houses for pleasant operation. We departed about 1300 and drove north. Dry sandy rocky country until valley of Rio Huaras, which was flat and green
