Peru-Trip
26 June 1967 To Panama City, Panama
Purposes of trip was studies of distribution and
ecology of various species in northern Peru, and
training of 3 gr. students: Robert Hamilton, Ray Huey,
and Fred McCallum. Also, to assemble equipment for
future trips by others. I departed from Sacramento
airport 0630 for San Francisco, where I met Hamilton.
We left 0800 on PAA flight 515 to Panama via Los
Angeles and Guatemala. McCallum joined us at
Los Angeles. Arrived Panama 1710 and stayed at Hotel
International near C.Z.
27 June 1967. The 3 of us took 0730 train from Balboa
to Frijoles station. Then to Barro Colorado Island in
boat with 12+ others, including Chichi-nan grey
and oldish. The trip was about the same as 10 yrs. ago.
Stanley Rand lived on BCI and seemed to be in charge of research
there. Lake full of people, including 2 working on Colobus
monkeys. We walked to summit of island, out to
AVA 13, and tracks. Usual early afternoon rain. Big
almonds (?) trees in prime blossom. Departed 3 p.m. for
Frijoles, Panama, & hotel ($5 each /night).
28 June 1967. To airport and took 0630 Braniff fl. 979
to Quito, Sucuyquil (where Huey joined us), and
Lima. Went to Humboldt House, Miraflores, where Drs.
Hans & Maria Kaeppeler effected us. Lodging at $1 per
day, big room to spread specimens, equipment for
the ironing. My shotgun (1963 purchase) was there. At
this season weather overcast, drizzly, and cool. Visited
