C. Koford Journal February 9, 1962 Kyushu Is, Japan this. I stayed in Kanmai Hotel, Beppu, for night (1720 yen). February 10, 1962. Again visited feeding area and area slightly upslope, in open forest around Buddhist temple. Maybe had removed so many tiles from roof, it had to be re-paired twice. I saw 2 m'm growing large or (photos); M. said they were 1 and 2 yr. olds growing 6 yr. old. In morning (1030) only small groups present. Many people (totally) fed them. Sometimes makura fought each other, looking away the people. Occasionally one climbed onto shoulder or back of visitor. Many grabbed pants leg in begging. Other searched side pockets of pants + coat + were difficult to get rid of. But apparently no one was injured. Some had areas of fur thin a tearing. One had crippled leg held doubled up. Other had old cut in lip, so teeth showed. Many had faces resembling Cape S. Rheas, but generally redder. Size larger than rheus. Often highest ranking male punished anims. or others. At least 500 people at feeding area at once; they pay 30 yen admission. I think personality gentler than rheus; otherwise people would be injured. Probably also less arboreal, though said to sleep in trees. In afternoon the large group came down to feeding area & fed. Somewhat difficult to communicate with M. or his English only fair. But in general his information seemed imprecise and poorly org- anized in his mind, with apparent attempt to fit what Stevi had described (Only about 200 animals in Stevi study). M. could not clearly distinguish downcoat from red-brown
