24 February 1964 Santa Cruz, Galapagos Is.
3 ad. or goats in bottom, I heard 2 others. But grazing effects not apparent save on trails across grass meadow. | We walked back to Hornmani in 2 hrs. In we I returned to Coral Bay.
25 February 1964. According to Juan Angermeyer, 2 men take about 100 lbs. dried bacalao per day, about 2000 lbs./mo. Fish Nov. to Semana Santa. Now use boat., Fishing poor starting 15 yrs. ago, but perhaps improving. Fritz has self-lostini outfit on boat for fish finding. Got little turtle or egg hen, & no octopus. Fishing boat must be able to go out; about 25' + have economical reliable motor. He thought about 50 men in largest bus., & that would be out of business within 1 yr. Little sport fishing now. | Cox, returning from trip, said many goats on Coral Bay. | Howell Williams, ret. from Clathan, said small cult. area, about 20 % or L of island; worst to N. very dry. Much guava in middle belt on W. side. Cattle present, but poorer than Santa Cruz; goats pres. but not common. Also burros. | C.Rick said also wild horses there. Goats few now, diminished. Some wild dogs, he was told. Burros in many or all parts island. Wild pigs & cattle too. Do pigs spread guava thru eating fruit? More soil than Santa Cruz, & to lower alt., perhaps 400'. Huge area guava in upper parts. Rick was told about 15% cultivated. Coffee apparently excellent. Plenty agrestia, carnes, m. shoes. About 2 500 people on San Cristobal; many military. Fresh streams in S part.
27 February 1964. Boarded "Golden Bean" about 11 a.m. Talked with geologists of Ecuador who had been on James Is., about 130 people
