22 February 1964
Isla Santa Cruz, Galapagos
very tall tree, planted tall bamboo clumps, rare acacia, oocas.
"mohogany" and "cedar" (=?- not swietenia m.), lolca. But coffee stethic
common, + tall avocados than lived trails + fields. Kept pigs + 5 cattle.
House about 700' elev. Muddy in rain. Papaya, pineapple, "king fruit."!
With Abbott, Bartholomew, Bernard, Merced, walked 1½ hrs. slowly up-
slope to pure Miria belt. Some grassland w. broken + shrubs; a
few Holstein cattle, in good cond. (the horses fine + port).
23 February 1964. Hiked to top of Santa Cruz; 9/10 overcast day w. some
rain. Much grass, but mostly ridges, palms, broken. In low
spots, some ponds w. many water plants, and caves leading down
into hollows underground, fern-lined at mouth. Cattle tracks
+ droppings common, but I saw only one - a fine black bull at
summit. Summit easily reached, + vegetation there nothing spec-
ial, mostly grasses. Occasional bar circular spots appear used
for stamping a rolling. Few birds in high zone; or flock 10+ fin-
ches, but saw no hawks. Broken clumps give appearance out-
own land in Pacific NW. (Local people say fires in past, + many
more cattle - even horses - a few yrs. ago.) Now Now does not
appear destructively grazed, tho may be in dry season. ! In we
talked with Alf Kentholm + father at their ranch. About 50 fine
large Holstein cattle. Said started cattle about 10 yrs. ago w.
bull bought Panama. But think doing poor. little future;
production meat more profitable. Pargola perhaps best grown
for cattle. Elephant grass for choking out unwanted veg. Be-
cause droughts, grow plantations as cattle food reserve. Said
many serious fire (set for fun by others), to 1962. Miria
