Koford Journal 15 February 1964 Gardner Is. an Hood Is, Galapagos. shaggy effect of veg., than on Hood. No wild goats. Maytenus + Cryptocarpus grow low but unbruised. Cotton plants common some sites. Ostij collected a snake. Saw finch, Tropiclanus. I counted 20 branches Opuntia but only 3 straight unbraid- ed, so reprod. low naturally. Laurus & more spreading than on Hood, the trimmer some thick, 4 pads of branches often lay & ground a mean it.| Much Bursera, nearly leafless. Many Cactus bruchs with a few leaves; commonly 3'; to 10'm. cliffs! Below Opuntia, many dropped leaves, but old & dried & not sprout- ing. Some of shape: [illegible], wider than high. Trunk spine 2" + sharp, hard; leaf spine soft.| Among boulders nearly every- where, climber jointed stalked leafless fork in clumps. A pulser- ent leaved shrub with small yellow flowers. A vine with "rouled" like fruit w. large hairy seeds covered some brusher. Collected samp- les. Attractive clean cobm rootin in bogs N. side; I spread 2 long- osters there.| One opuntia 24" diam, spreading 18' wide, 9' high; trunk branched at 1 1/2'. Dozens old pads below & near. Why no little reprod.? Porridge said thru animals needed? A dry un- attractive island with little wilddef wildlife. 16 February 1964. Some rain night.| Carlos said had seen goats drink sea water N. side Santo Cruz. Also had seen some dying there, with diarrhea. He had noticed some of same effects that I had, such as eating Bursera bark. He said something eatin in to center of Opuntia & broke it over; then many feet on gosta eating one fellentree it - he saw 15 at once on Hood, he said. Saut. had pro. dlicted killing goats, at one time, so argument with Leungay who wanted to kill. Then not supposed to take more than 2.
