Koford Journal 13 February 1964 Hood Island, Galapagos Is. 220 not at edge (most normally pristine ?). Near coast N. of summit, saw 3 scaled Opuntia in mesquite. Walking inland (5), 1130, entered edge open gora, small boulders scattered for brushier, occas. opunt. (7,8') ias (50 to 200 yrs. apert). Photos: 1 Opuntia. This was above a review Bursero gen. Occas. India tree (yellow flower) or Castilia low bush. Opuntia - branch stubs lower down, at about 6'. Numerous limbs, tho spined. One had stiff spines part trunk (prob. young plant has large spine, the lower parts have soft spines). / Freckly Recently dead brown or lay under slope trees. Higher, was Opuntia on N. slope. One 2' diam.: many goat droppings nr. / 1250, Black ♂, 2 brown + ad.♀, 1 br.+bl. yr./ All 4 ♀♀ in clump, 4♂ stayed close to ♂. He buzzed at me, at 50 yds. / 13p, ad. & chocolate w/ white side blaze, ad. & ten, ad. ♂? / On open area, many tufts fine bunch grass, grazed to 2"; dead & dry, but new growth & foals 1-2" high nearly every step at about 500' level: so good seed germination, + small herbs alongside boulders & small rocks. Water standing in hollows in rocks. / 1250, I was at about 550', to N. of peak, & started back to W. / 1305, gp. 3 ad.♀ (davy w. white blaze side chest, day, & buckskin), big bay kid. / 1400, gp. 3 ♂ (bay, 1 w. white blaze). / 1400, 3 ♂ ♂ ♂ ad. 1435, gp. 2 ♂ (bay w. large side blaze; black-brown) + 1 ad.♀. Returns to camp. / Picked up shell ad. ♂ and pup ♂ Balophus or beach. / Off beach in front camp, got 2 fine Langostas in 20 min.-groupers, parrot fish, green-spined crabs, & usual thme. 14 February 1964. 11 of us left via petrol boat for Charles, leaving 7 (Bartholomew, Benedictus, Anderson, Peterson, Ortiz, Carpenter, K.) on Hood, with Castro & D'Latano / I'm photosing at weather shore, a big wave took me by surprise & soaked
