Keford Journal - Galapagos. 1 February 1964 Borrington Is, Galapagos; just 3 of 5 real beach; worked maybe high in finding on beaches. Appea- rently at least 9, but prob not over 10, in area surveyed. A “beach” land once, but arrived not seen (young ?). / Back at camp 1835; still light enough to read. / Lemelle go. Had dug 2 soil profile beaches island today. 2 February 1964. Lv. 6 a.m. 10/10 station. Walked up slow to W group, looking for summit. 0735, saw summit to SW (had stopped 20 min.). 0755 “mangarita” stet on flat when 12+ Cryptocarpus beaches to 10’ tall, drew line at 5’; stet -> 4 1/2' photod. D hiked for summit. 0825, saw 5, all od. 0707 (large forest long beaks). Come up on 12+ “mangarita” beaches, drew line 4 1/2’. Cactus roots 1/2” long near bare trunk, pulled up + ends chewed off, doubtless by goats. I saw this soil places, the trees not currently dying of effect. In this high country, at least 1 in every 5 opuntia has 1 or more pads lying near base (the may be dry, unwettable); whereas near camp, about 9 out of 10 have no pads at all. / Long beard lichen on lunsera; these fronds rare below 4 1/2’; possibly cropped dry goats, the rock + other low lichens show no evidence of use. / I saw one od. or grow at ever browner thick pieces fallen opuntia branch; pained to remove five remaining species? Had 1/2 eaten, mostly from one flat side. Shot him. Stom contents wet, with about 10 % sea fresh cactus or other succulent material (perhaps 3% near camp). Doubtful that whole daily trip down 600 ft slope to sea daily. line. Do parasites seen. Liver uncoated. No fat. Bubbling brown with black middles + big black stripes, black face. He was with a female + kid (3 nos ?). Bezel 1/2 colored black, + again upper (about 94) long, lower P short correspondingly [illegible] Molar rows, sides. Mr. summit, goats fomer + perhaps more coming. One very small,
