29 January 1964.
Barrington Is. Galapagos
out. Some small sea iguana on open coast just outside bay to N. of beach. / about 50 sea lions using 50 yd. long sand beach (5 of the 2),
with a bull calling much of time, or into night. Some small pups!
30 January 1964. Sea lion barkin all night. "Lurett" returned to Academy Bay. I walked to top ridge N. of beach & out it to W., then back. Saw spider crab - barbed cactus pads chewed through, apparently to get center 3/4" pulp. Injured timber opercula also chewed at edges surface layers, enlarging wound. Some burena timbre had bark bitten or scraped off in 4" x 8" section near base, as if by goats. Most heard lichen above 5", but not sure got effect.
Scratched hollows in soft soil common, goat roll a bit then ? / goats about 7 am, black & brown od. fed at green shrubs at shore S side
" "
I saw another anchyline to SE, 2 black obs. center cliffs to S. Probably descend at night, ascend in morning. But few in proportion to sign - in dry shrub it lasts, & perhaps many shot in camp zone. 10720, left camp. Status overcast. At top ridge S. of camp, 2 hembra set on opercula pod of tree & let me approach to 8'. Nearly black birds.
Occasionally I saw yellow-green or brown mottled land iguana about 3' long. Some in boulders or on thin, some loose operation, & taken to hide in soil. Smallest about 18" long. I saw about 20, nearly stepping on some. Usually allow approach to 10' or less. / I saw 2 black goats in 100 yds. flat atop sand ridge S. of bay; little veg. there, & few rocks. / I saw mocking bird hopping on back of large iguana on rocks; bird pecked at scul or maybe of lizard - he compliant. Later saw mocking hops within 6" resting iguana; common area.
