Koford Journal - Galapagos Islands 21 January 1964 Dick Academy Bay / indefatigable. Talked with Mr. Roth, who has been here about 8 mos. and lives at Horneman's farm, about 800 ft. elev. He said now few potatoes because of drought. Coffee produced, but processing difficult. Has heard fish traps do not work well here. Much agave is felled. Introduced grasses planted, including pampas & elephant grass and - vin. Alf Kost- dalen has ranch near Horneman's. Holstein dairy herd, & doing well. In drought fed banana stems, cut and then or ground. To clear ground, a vine (bean) used, & elephant grass in openings; then choke out other. Drought Jan.- July, 1963; resulted less cattle & other feed. Lantana introd. by Croyes 20-30 yrs. ago; not on Santa Cruz. Cherimoya spreading. Draca too (offer cattle spread it?). Now more animals high on hills than before, when drunk there. Dry areas least changed. Micronia replaced by mixture brush. Dry shrub zone a buffer against spread of plants from other islands. Hibiscus mainly shrub zone. Cattle - father of Costas introd. about 1933. Keptel. fire 20 yrs. (28?). Pigs introd. about 1937; lived on at first. Eat roots Pleia squarula (sp. ?). Turtles larger now than before. Burros, burros & pigs & cattle had settled in drought yrs., 1963. Dogs now rare on Santa Cruz. 22-23 January 1963. Skin diving, fish & invert. collecting, near Darwin station. Bottom a jumble angular lava boulders, with no sea fans & rare corals. But schools surgeon fish, mullet, parrot fish, others - abundant fish. Caught large longtooths 200 yds. off station landing. 3 common sea anemone; brittlestar common; anemones few; sponges abundant. Marine squires common,
