6 January 1964. San Juan, P.R., to Berkeley, Calif.
Departed San Juan 1000, Delta Air Lines via New Orleans to San Francisco.
Arrived 4:10 p.m. Went to Berkeley.
Berkeley, Calif
7 - 9 January 1964. Various meals & symposia with others
of the Galapagos International Scientific Project, sponsored by Univ.
of Calif. Extension, led by Dr. R. Uengler. Shopping & preparations.
10 January 1964. With about 50 other members, boarded Calif.
Maritime Academy training ship "Golden Bear" near Vallejo. We
all bunked in one large compartment. Departed about 11 a.m.
11-18 January 1964. Morning & afternoon symposia on board
as we sailed S. We passed close by Guadalupe Is., said to be
inhabited by goats. A few dozen large trees on top, unseen from E. side.
Birds at sea: four gulls at first, then albatrosses, fulmars, black-footed albatross (2 mos.). Later boobies, tropic birds, frigate birds, gannets, petrels. Occas. porpoises or flying fish, & one day many red crayfish-like crustaceans at surface. But usually rare Jan. 17 and 18 and #9
and seldom over a dozen birds in sight. About 13 stratus overcast.
19 January 1964. We arrived at Galapagos Is. & cruised past Pinta, Fernandina, F. side Albemarle, W. side James & Darwin,
to Academy Bay, arriving mid afternoon. Most were pleasantly surprised at quantity & greenness of vegetation on Albemarle & others. Many sea birds among islands, & we saw a few sea lions in sea.
