30 March 1962
Zerich, Switzerland
had one infant golden lion in captivity. Two young chimps
in ape house.. otherwise little change in zoo since 1960
visit. 1 Freight flight with monkeys did not arrive 1600
as scheduled- finally arrived 0500 of 31 March; I
boarded ( Constellation ) and accompanied to London, arri-
ing 1030, with brief stop Frankfurt en route. Monkey
area in plane about 7' high by 10' wide. Cages stacked
thus in cross section ( drawing of cages ), so 3 rows. Two new spent most
of time in flight in feeding & watering animals. They had re-
moved dead adult # in Berlin; a 4 lb. one near death by Frank-
anotherfiat, + another died in London. I asked animal man on plane if
died monkeys of Patterson shipment, as some of Vita also on
board. He said "of course; Vita almost never has losses." | Area
of monkeys seemed well ventilated & of suitable temperature.
| At London airport animals unloaded into closed van, in
cold wind. Taken to R S P C A building, where put in clean
warm room, cages cleaned, water given, and dog dis-
fuit. The building well scrubbed and cleaning thorough,
with new non-stick put in cage trays. Their records showed
that one died in cage 56 in our shipment of Feb. 11; Okwen said
Patterson told him that 12 were dead in N.Y., on that shipment.
Today animals due to leave about 6 p.m. on Leebord for N.Y.
I went to N.Y. on PAA flight 73 arriving about 1810 p.m. E/

at San Juan about 11 p.m. | Monkey shipment arrived
