C. Roford 50 Journal 30 March 1962 Zerich, Switzerland had one infant golden lion in captivity. Two young chimps in ape house.. otherwise little change in zoo since 1960 visit. 1 Freight flight with monkeys did not arrive 1600 as scheduled- finally arrived 0500 of 31 March; I boarded ( Constellation ) and accompanied to London, arri- ing 1030, with brief stop Frankfurt en route. Monkey area in plane about 7' high by 10' wide. Cages stacked thus in cross section ( drawing of cages ), so 3 rows. Two new spent most of time in flight in feeding & watering animals. They had re- moved dead adult # in Berlin; a 4 lb. one near death by Frank- anotherfiat, + another died in London. I asked animal man on plane if died monkeys of Patterson shipment, as some of Vita also on board. He said "of course; Vita almost never has losses." | Area of monkeys seemed well ventilated & of suitable temperature. | At London airport animals unloaded into closed van, in cold wind. Taken to R S P C A building, where put in clean warm room, cages cleaned, water given, and dog dis- fuit. The building well scrubbed and cleaning thorough, with new non-stick put in cage trays. Their records showed that one died in cage 56 in our shipment of Feb. 11; Okwen said Patterson told him that 12 were dead in N.Y., on that shipment. Today animals due to leave about 6 p.m. on Leebord for N.Y. I went to N.Y. on PAA flight 73 arriving about 1810 p.m. E/ 1 April 1962. Flights delayed by bad weather. De- parted for on PAA flight 211 about 7 p.m., and arrived at San Juan about 11 p.m. | Monkey shipment arrived about 0800 San Juan on April 4, almost 6 days in tran-
