M. Koford 1961 Vicugna 5. May 27 8 mi. SSW Zimbassi, 15000', Dpto. Puno below the house, lying down a short way from where the one was earlier. At 4:30 it was grazing again in the same place where it was at 1:30. At 5:30 it was too foggy to see from the lower end of the lake basin above camp so I walked across toward the house. I disturbed one below the house and 3 on the slope to the north of the basin. June 9 (We have now moved to house above south ponds.) This morning a little before 10:00 am I noticed a commotion among some vicuñas moving into sight over the lower rim of the basin north of the house. Many of them seemed to be running and making noise. By the time I got out the telescope, all but six were quietly grazing. Two pairs were running and a third pair were rubbing necks together. I watched this last pair for 20 minutes. They lay down side by side and nuzzled one another. Then one stood up and straddled the other. Then the second stood and the first mounted it. The under one moved away and the other followed. The one which had moved away arched its neck and rubbed against the other.
