C. Koford 115 Journal September 18, 1951 Juliaca, Dpto. Puno. and much ammunition. Said good codorniz + perdiz hunting nearby + offered to take me thru. Said had seen moscas & "siete colores" (flycatcher) at Sicuani. 3 hunting dogs, one a pointer. Said had seen chinchillas at Heda. Nuanco (near Sta. Lucia). Told me of a large toucan - like bird, much larger than codorniz, few found only at highest places (Bra. Pardo too, + some name - quilque ?? - but description sounded like seed snipe). September 19, 1951. Departed 7:30 am. for Arecoina. Total trip to camp 150 miles. 40 miles to Lucara, 15 to Ayamiri fork, 10 to Acillo, thence +2 to Rosari o, 18 more to Cuncro (120 from Juliaca), +5 to 5 to fork, 10 to ft. Lake Arecoina, 10 to camp. Saw 50+ teel on lake ponds several miles beyond Acillo, about 100 geese on wet flat before Acillo. The ponds near Rosario with gallinules, ibis, yellow teg, as usual. Shot 2 of Lycalis at roodbank lakes 3 miles before Rosario, a pair of geese 5 miles before Juliaca, + white breasted-bawl (same as #1245) at Lake Arecoina. Light hail over cuncro plain + fog in Lumbani valley. Many reported clear most of day since my departure, least temperature - 5 1/2 °C. September 20, 1951, Arecoina, 15000', Dpto.
