August 26, 1951 To Aricoma (15000'), Dpto. Peno, Peru.
alpacas. (Incidentally, many newborn lambs in this
season. Paredes lost about 100 of his 8000 sheep in
recent snowstorm, mostly lambs.) 26.8 mi. from
P. passed another high point, but all of this are
high with short grass rolling pasture & still
much snow or graund (14000+? ). 35.6 miles
Picotani
from P. arrived at road end - Nela. [illegible]
(a similar sounding name). Family road further
to Cruero but bridge now gone. We had to go back
to about 5 miles from Putna. Shall this 'side trip'
cost us about 5 hours time. Saw 3 bandavient
as near the hacienda. Arrived back at fork 1:45 p.m.
& drove toward Ayángaro on rough dirt road - no
steep places or considerable hills. 7.3 miles from
fork a large lake with many gallinules, shins, geese.
16.1 mi. from fork a lake about 1 mile long with
croats, ducks. 37.6 miles from fork met road
from Torco at bridge at Ayángaro. Bought gas.
Añillo junction 17.7 miles from Ay., & trailer
85 miles beyond. Stopped for mail in Queros.
Arrived trailer 9:45 p.m. Still + "snow or graund
in trailer area & only with difficulty reached trailer
over the crusty snow. The Indians with ganado
had gone. A several miles before Rosario saw
a caprindalgid on road and a fox in same
area.
