C. Koford 102 Journal August 6, 1951 To Juliaca, Dpto. Puno, Peru. Somontes along Carabaya river. Just before Arillo a lake with 7 flamingos near shore. Another lake seven miles beyond Arillo had reeds on wetlands & with (skid & eggs) 2 or 3 young, a darker smaller root, black ruddy-like ducks, small grebes (white necks, black tops heads), 10+ cornutsa, 3+ night heron, & black (cream-faced) + white headed dude. Saw turkey mullein near Juliaca. Found Duffield got to Anguipa; stayed in their house. August 7, 1951 Juliaca, Dpto. Puno. Stopped & washed clothes. Clear & warm at midday - said to already be warmer than July. Departed about 3 p.m.; drove to near Rosario, & slept in car. At Juliaca met Joseph L. Kaleski (to Wessel Dewet & Co., Casilla 380, Lima), a mining equipment salesman who had returned from Santo Domingo mines a few days ago. He said that message could be relayed by phone from Limbani to the Santo Domingos. Andres T. Dasso & Clarence Lee Woods were bosses at mine; both speak English. Kaleski had walked 15+ km. forward road to Ocanaque & ridden mule to S.D. next day. Of Saguitambo mine (near Sunbay & Junta?), he said there were many rocks & vicachas & that the manager, Olaf Westhoff, was hospitable. Another mine - Ceilona - about 20 km. distant; Joseph Schnetha mgr. August 8, 1951 To Arcoira, 1500', Dpto. Puno. Cold night & sweet ponds frozen over on Cuccero pampas. Drove to Cucuro & on to Arcoira. Saw cost (not breeding giant) near head of Lake Arcoira. Umbrella Clear, shaky lone in afternoon. 10 p.m. ayun. & rested at camp. Temps. thus at 10:30 a.m., -7° +8° since
