C. Koford 101 Journal August 3, 1951. Aricoma, 15000', Depto. Puno, Peru. a Cincledor . Clear night. August 4, 1951. Temps. -6°, +8°C. Clear. Watched local vicunas 6:10-6:45. Frost this morning. Departed for Crucero 8:30 a.m. 2 fial (genus wings?) Near Crucero shot 1 Caracara, 2 Lessonia, and saw marsh hawks. Returning, shot Speotyto & Chloephaga near shore of Lake Aricoma. Saw 20+ llamas in lower division of lake. Saw 4 flocks at one near outlet in morning. Buteo type hawks (chestnut back) nest 1/2 mile on Lake side of summit apparently unoccupi- ed now. Old nest 50 yds. from never looking one. Both halfway up 50' high solid rock cliff. Stick at about 14,000', ascending nests or niches in cliff face from Crucero, saw flock of green parakeets. Saw 1 turkey vulture near Crucero departing -16:30 August 5, 1951. Temps. -7°, +7°C. same yesterday morning . Coldest night here so far but no frost. Dry, rel. humidity 20% at noon. Hygrometer read 25%-50% at midday most days. Very clear morning. Packed up specimens & wrote letters. New moon. August 6, 19 51 Temps. -8°, +7°C. same yesterday a.m. Rel. humidity 25% at 6 a.m. Watched group B vicunas 6:20-7a.m. Departed 8:15 a.m. for Juliaca. One coat near head of Lake Aricoma (rarely seen). About 300 cattle on slopes near middle of lake, 100+ alpacas near upper end, 10+ cattle at outlet again Aug. 4 saw gull with black head on small lake 1 mile below Aricoma or road. A caracara on newborn dead lamb on Lake C. shore. Shot a gallinule near Rosario & saw 20+ in all in several ponds. One kind of coot there as well as mara & guayacuda (commonest).
