July 23, 1951 To Sandia, Dpto. Puno, Peru-
Drier than Limbani canyon but mud, water in bottom canyon;
clear
swift stream. Eucalyptus but no other trees at Sandia.
Muck brush up to 10' high. End of road. Many stores
with good supply food, clothes, hardware. Only cars transit
trucks. Steady stream llama & mule traffic both direct-
ions. People friendly & no military or police questioning. We
camped about 1/2 mile above town on flat near river. Good tun-
nel, partly caved in, nearly; no bats in. Saw bats 5:30 to
dawn. Shot 1 Tadarida (07/158); others (100+) apparently some,
flipping high over brush of river bottom. Set 20 traps near
rocks & brush (rather dry) in dawn.
July 24, 1951 To Aricoma, 15000', Dpto. Puno, Peru-
Traps held; Grypnus (1157). Humid night with frost;
late sunrise because of high walls of canyon. Inquired at
hotel, store, & people for Mrs. Heller; they knew her from
last trip but she had not arrived. Left note for her
at hotel. Good pineapples for sale. Striker Nuñez show-
ed me spotted bear hide (small). We departed about 10
a.m. & drove up to summit. Shot 1 coot there (07/16).
First wounded me on shore 60' from the O? (in aquatic weed
"nest island). The O? then swam to shore & I shot it. Saw
another near a nest island, accompanied by 3 small
swimming young; another adult swimming near.
Aras & teel + corcomante + guills present; Onoclede ? along
shores. 2 Thrustivine about 1000' down on Cuyo-Cuyo side.
4.9 miles summit to Pato-Bruces road. Back to Bruces for
gas.
Shot 2 large Tursiops, be-
Gast Home to Aricoma after dark & tween Sandia & Cuyo-Cuyo.
