July 15, 1951 Sunday Aricoma, 15000', Depto. Puno, Peru
Temp. -4-1/2°C. last night min. Clear; smoky haze.
Traps near home: 1 bird (corvina), 1 A. jelskii.
Expected traps. x Only string low in SE canyon among rocks
& linesies had catch: 2 A. jelskii, 3 P. pictus, 2 Lomomya
(young). Returned to camp & inspected & put up spee-
imines. Briefly looked for vicuna in moonlight (moon 1 or 2 days)
before full.
July 16, 1951. Temps. -4-1/2°, +11°C. Clear. Watched vicunas
7:30 to 11 a.m. Shot a Phrygilus, one of flock 50+. The 9
Llanurria (11'35) shot July 14 had growth on sole of
center one foot, potatoe-like tubourous bulge on foot,
curving around toes, 1"x1-1/2"x1/2" (thick), covered with
regular foot scales. Bones normal. Watched vicunas go
to no bed. Lacks about 1 day of full moon.
July 17, 1951. Temps. -4°C., +9°C. Watched vicunas 5:30 to
(Thinocorus)
6:20 a.m. Clear, warm. Shot a 998 from flock 20+; made skeleton.
Drove 7.6 miles toward Limbani to 13000-ft. level and
set 76 traps on slopes near rocks, tall grass, brush. The
yellow-flowered Lonicis present but also guiris-like bush,
at least 2 other kinds bushes, and yucca-like coctus.
Clear day & warm. Returned to house. Saw an immature
cardc near house. Saw fox near S. Cards at noon &
one running from garbage pile 5 p.m. (shot this one, a
&). Several days ago, when trapping low in SE canyon
saw a hummingbird, large & brown, perch on fresh blood
spot where vicacha shot - attracted by red? or feed-
ing?
Full moon, clear night.
Temp. -3-1/2°, +9°C.
July 18, 1951. Checked on 2 limbus vicunas at 6 a.m.
We drove down to traps. Catch in first 40: 3 P. pictus
