C. Koford 92 Journal July 3, 1951 Arizcona, 15000', Dpto. Pongo Pers. somewhat thin + reddish on sides. Perhaps a spawning group. Drive on to Crucero, then to Arconza camp arriving noon. Temps. since leaving -2°, +14½°C, thermometer in cavity in rock wall. Cumulus clouds+ pleasant temperature with little wind. Good crew had burned about an acre of mixed rocks + grass in North Canyon trying to get viscazas with smoke (drive out of summit or soda point. a hill in rocks). Saw caracara nest, said to have eggs, on lake side. July 4, 1951. Temps. -2°, +10°, +3° at dawn. Clear, calm. Little ice on water. Watched vicuñas most of day. Saw vicuña group pursue fox + saw territorial encounters. Not over 1/10 clouds, cumulus, all day; fair E. breeze. July 5, 1951. Temps. -3°, +9°, +2° at 8 a.m. Clear, calm. Watched vicuñas 8-12, 1 to 4:30. Saw group of 31 with many fights within and whole group chased a few times by single flock of small bands. Colder than yesterday. Fair E. wind. Fog 4:30-5:30. Not over 1/10 clouds, cumulus, all day. July 6, 1951. Water getting low. Flowing trickle of water supply dried up. Main duck pond getting dry. July 6, 1951. Temps. -½°, +10°C. Clear. Fair wind down canyon 6:30 a.m. Watched vicuñas, mainly bunch 31, 7:15-12, 1 to 4:30. Breeze died about 1 p.m., renewed about 4. Clear all day. July 7, 1951. Temps. -1½°, +11°C. Fair breeze down canyon at 1 to 5 p.m. 6-7 a.m. Clear. Watched vicuñas 6:45 a.m. to 12, The snipe- like plover (like 190) in flower 20 t. Flock 50+ finches, gray Warblers + yellow-breasts (Phrygilus) seen. Doves scarce at 5. Parks now - because of shooting & low water. Place name: Rock Shelter
