June 28, 1951 San Antonio de Esquilache, Dpto. Puno, Peru
Cold morning. Breath froze in nostrils. Water froze quickly at 7 a.m.
We departed 9 a.m. for San Antonio de Esquilache. Road good. We
arrived about 11:30. Beyond camp grass shorter & much grazed. The
silt-
mire on a gray rock filled 15' wide river, at office, our altimeter
read 14750' (they said 15000 by military survey). Met manager, an Austrian
named Davidovich. Had lunch with him & doctor & 2 other men (twice
2 of them). They had nicely furnished lounge room & nicely prepared food.
They had seen vicuñas as but no vicuña or other animals in this
region. # The village of SA de E. a few minutes beyond, on some
stream. We drove up the highest ascending road. It too about 2
miles it ended, at 15000', but trail went to the east nearly. Hundreds
of Indians working mines in the area, & many new mud dwelling
being built. Little vegetation here but rock slides, rock outcroppings,
& forage water seeps. Hips & alpacas grazing on slopes. Both
are grazed & used-looking ground with fox trapping sites or
camping sites. Water in some tributaries to main river. About 2 p.m.
we left & drove to Juliaca. Saw no vicuñas a titamours
gong or coming from SA de E. Did see 2 flock of 50+ green per-
quitas at 14000' ft. Stayed at Clinica Americana in Juliaca. Dr. Duffy
had returned from recent trip to 30 km. below Quine mill (a bridge being
built thru) and reported road excellent (550 km. from Juliaca; 2 long
day of driving).
June 29, 1951. Juliaca, Dpto. Puno

June 30, 1951. Shopped at Puno. Visited Extranjeria - no
