June 17, 1951 Aricoma, 15000', Dpto, Puno, Peru.
Day before full. Fog up canyon to camp area 5 p.m. Many
had one of jelshii in trap, not spanned last 2 days. She
put loose steel trap in front of vicuocha hole. Fog until after
6 p.m., then clear overcast.
June 18, 1951. Temps. - 2° + 8½°C. at 7:30. Band 39
vicuoras near near camp. Two alpacas stayed near & Indian
came for them. Many had no luck with vicuocha traps. I left 8am.
reopened my 24 traps; catch only one A. jelshii. Let 11 new
traps that area, 40 in all now. Back at house 10:30. About
1/10 clouds + little breeze; warmer than usual morning.
That gray flycatcher + dark gray finch on rocks on
lamp growth slopes. Watched vicuoras 2 hrs. Full moon.
Sweet 4:45 p.
June 19, 1951. Temps. -½°, +13° C. My traps held 2 chinchil
ula, 1 Neotoma, 1 Phyllotis pictus. Warm morning, 1/10 clouds
increasing to 9/10 big moon. Put up mice. Snow, light,
for about an hour at 3 p.m. Took walk along line 5. Still looking
for rodent signs. Flushed 2 of the terraneras on S. Ridge.
June 20, 1951. Temps. - 2°, +7°. Clear. My traps lines held 1
lizard, no mammals. Returned to house 0930. We drove to
road up to vicuocha Roche & there set 3 steel traps. Caught one ox
drought it home. I watched vicuoras bend of 10 from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Set a fog trap (# 3) 50 yds. w. House. Clouded up gradually, 6/10
big moon, nearly completely by 3 p.m. Moonrise about 7:39 p.m.,
moonwaning just shortly past full.
June 21, 1951. Temps. -2°, +7°C. Clear with cold wind down canyon. We
went to Upper fox to try to catch vicuochas & remained until noon, catching
none. Saw several bands vicuoras, up to 15 in number, & unusually,
