C. Koford 85 Journal June 13, 1951 To Macusani, Dto. Puno, Peru. ed road in .9 miles. Summit 2.6 miles from road, a foot of Lake Cucusu 22.8 Arceina (where road crosses settled) 7.5 from summit. Leaving pass from Summit. Shopped some; malmen not in town. Drew toward Rosario & 16.5 miles from Cucus took turnoff toward Macusani. Road up rolling short grass pasture valley where bands of alpacas & llamas hurt few cliffs & little cultivation. Higher peaks without vegetation with log rock slide. Summit was 16.7 miles from turnoff; elev. 15,700' by altimeter. Little water there; an occasional small lake or stream. No bushes - few rock outcroppings. Windy. Macusani about 12 miles beyond at 14:00', a town about size of Cucusu with fair selection in shops. Approach to this area in broad short grass rolling area with little cultivation, few houses, but several bands stock. Large snowy nevadas & jogged nevadas to right as approach town. Did not stay main but turned around & drew back toward Cucusu, road law a few vicunas. Food satisfactory but rougher than Cucusu-Limani road. Macusani area not as green or wet as our camp area though also an amazon side of nita. Returned to Cucusu bought supplies, & drove to camp in dark. Saw no rodents or other mammals in road on way. June 14, 1951. May - min. thermometer read +8° & 0° (It was half a mac overcast all day yesterday & threatened rain near Cucusu at dusk). My 28 traps held: Rimmysa & 1 A. yelshii minn. (discarded; 2-7pm 07, tot. h. 101). May had taken up her 6 live traps yesterday & I set there in my line at foot of Chinchillula cliff baiting with peanuts, oatmeal, & mouse meat. Shifted 4 of my traps to 34
