June 2, 1951 8 mi. SSW Limbani, 16000 ft. Dpts. Pung
bushes, and other near large rocks between Camp &
Two Huts. Many tailed rodents & birds on remaining snow
near Two Huts. Clear all day. Sunset 4:30 p.m. Then 0° C.
June 3, 1951. Sunday. Temps. min. -7° C., max. +3° C.
Clear. Fair breeze. Saw several vicuñas in Basin &
South Basin. Hualltes, 15, up at about same place as
yesterday. Inspected traps 7 a.m.; catch one P. pictus, & this
fresh & warm. This min. ♀, wt. 28 gms., tot. length 171 mm.
Caught lace stone wall next to nettles, 6' from aromatic queen bush.
We departed in jeep for Limbani at 10:40 a.m. 13.2 miles
to Limbani on good rocky dirt road, not excessively rough.
Limbani at +2 11000'. Road not steep but one sharp hair-
pin turn shortly above town . At 12000' some bushes, &
many bushes at Limbani. Several well stocked store thru
Road continued on, narrow but good for jeep, another
6 miles down west side of canyon. Passed through one
100' long tunnel on way & road ended at end of 250
(8750' above road)
yd. long tunnel in rock; then good mule trail down
very steep high slope
canyon. Below Limbani parts of east side 20' wide
clear rushing river were forested with close jungle -
like growth, some trees 50' or+ in height. Above first
ridge tops were grassy & rocky - possibly burned in
past; one ridge burning at this time . At end
road, jungle continuous to tops of ridges. Brown-
side in trees . A prominent plant was bamboo-
like large brush with palmate compound leaves.
