C. Koford 78 Journal May 30, 1951 To Juliaca, Dpto. Puno, Peru. At camp, -6° C to +16° C. Last day. Departed 8 a.m. for Juliaca. 8:10 overcast. At Posario 10 a.m. Cost pond 2+ miles before Posario had 15+ costs. One with green legs and red frated shield (white edgewing) had 4 young, downy, with red bills. At noon, at Acillo, 82 1/2 miles from summit near camp. Saw a young foxglove root 4 miles toward Ayaviri. Then a lake with 50+ cooters and some ducks. Some individual coots standing on 3' diameter islands of vegetation (nesta?). 10 miles from Acillo to Ayaviri-Tirapata junction, then 6 miles to Tirapata, 7.8 miles to another small town, 1.4 to river crossing (bridge), and 9 miles to main Cuzco- Juliaca road. Thence 40.4 miles to Juliaca, arriving 2:40 p.m. Thence 27 1/2 miles to Puno. Went to Dpto. Eyten-jeria in Prefecture. They had heard nothing on my solicited for residence. Shopped. Returned to Juliaca and stayed with Duffie's. They had seen 5+ condors and many bats at Sondia last week. May 31, 1951 Puno & Juliaca, Dpto. Puno, Peru. Drave to Puno to visit Prefecture. Carmila not there but telegram sent to Lima, inquiring, and nothing else necessary. Shopped. Returned to Juliaca. Packed specimens so far and left them at Duffie's. On way to Puno immediately encountered flock 50+ parakeets 5 miles from Puno and shot 2. Yellow-breasted finch with olive back common One of tinker 6 x 4 mm., wt. 24g. A on ground about half way made. Also saw sparrow-lark, white-breasted junco with chestnut shoulders and blue-gray back, cavener, and 30+ glossy ilusis. Day clear but rather cool. Stayed Juliaca for night.
