C. Koford 77 Journal MAY 28/1951 Nr. Crucero, Depto. Puno, Perú. road, 2½ mile from Limbani - Crucero - Pato junction. Saw vicuñas, Thinocorus gêes, a kind of birden, many white tailed snipes, a blue- gray backed large hawk with white tail tipped with black brand, & a horned owl (shot this). Less than 2 mile toward Sandia from S-Crucero junction encountered lake 5½ mile dry long set in heavily grazed & stocked rolling & steep short grass area. Saw one group 10± llamas/llaras. Summit, 17650', was 5 mile from junction. Then down switchbacks to a small clear stream in deep rocky canyos of dry aspect. Much llorva traffic. We turned back & stemed to Crucero (arrived about 6 p.m.). Going toward Sandia from Crucero crossed a clear run 16 miles out, 10' wide clear run 2.5 miles further on, & small clear stream 1.6 mile further. Partial (⅓) overcast in afternoon. About 10 miles toward Crucero from Sandia turnoff shot 3 of 4 young green-winged teal (?) on small shallow pond. May 29, 1951. Min. temps. last 2 nights -6 °C. Took up the 60 traps. Catch, 2 A. jelaskii. Summit traps were near foot of slope to N. of road, other on S. side Dream Lake. Clear until about 10 a.m.; 3/4 steamy canyones by noon. Columbine- (narrow leaves) blue red flowers in bloom, & yellow flowered aromatic bush with heads of flowers. Of the 3 green winged teal shot yesterday, 2 were ♀ with largest ovary 1 mm., & one ♂ with testes 10 mm. long. Bills yellow on sides & black on top. Breast nearly white, speckled with spots anteriorly, & head & gray upper necks with fine dark & white lines. Fog in afternoon. Put up specimens including owl.
