lake. A few stone corks + one small bird alpspecc saw. Saw 3 groups vicunas, several guas & liches (one with downy young), + many picachos. Many rock slides & glaciers topped rocks. Good lands & good but few places to drive off. Didnt this a good area to camp in or near. Drove with trailer over rest + about 2 miles down on Limbani side to 14900-14500 ft. elev. Camped there beside road.
Set 30 snap traps in rocks near pats + grass in rolling area. Only one track passed today. The big grey & white plumes here, + the Rhinoceros white lullied tinamou-looking small ground bird, + some flickers.
A gray rail robin-sized bird common on rocks. Saw one humming-bird-large, saw white tipped tail feather, orange head, body gray or brown. A highlight of day was seeing an arctic fox lay road on Limbani side summit. It was quite fearless & stood 20' from car for several minutes. Cloudy + a few cumulus in late afternoon.
May 25, 1951 Sun on peaks before 6 a.m. & at camp about 6:15. Snap traps held 2 large Phylloletes, 1 small Phylloletes, + 1 short tailed Phylloletes. At 6:30 a.m. no birds in evidence saw guas & liches on pond. Returns to camp. At sunrise, low steamy clouds toward Limbani. About 8 a.m. Departed on exploratory trip. 1/2 mile north of camp was lake 200 yds. across, very clear, much vegetation growing in water, flat overhanging banks. Two gadwall-like brownish ducks with dark band though eye swam in lake, then to shore + looked in reeds, standing in sun. Wreaths of fish (?) droppings around lake shore. 1/4 hour past at 7:55 a.m. Saw 11 vicunas. 9:05, 35 shot near I shot brown jay, carcass which was feeding on leg off low wip. carcass. Saw large brown hummingbird with green throat. Return to camp 10:30 o.m. to write note + put up awnings. -11 C. Last night
