C. Koford 73 Journal May 22, 1951 To nr. Asillo, Depto. Puno, Peru. 16 miles from Ojopangaro. Again met Pascual Macano Velasquez at bridge bryd Asillo toward Cuzero. Camped alongside road at Taraco 13000 ft. Between Nuanceone & Taraco saw 5 barandurios; they seemed considerably larger than the numerous glossy ibises. Saw a pair of stilts (?) with white head, neck, & body but blackwings in marsh near Taraco. May 23, 1951. Clear morning. Continued on toward Cuzero. Stopped for an hour and fished in miri Carabaya. Caught 6 trout, all rainlawa, up to 10" long. Water very clear. None caught in fast-moving water. About 2 miles beyond Rosario saw coots, young coots (?-red frontal shield, saw white feather showing below folded wings), blue billed rufous ducks; several ducks with blue bills & black cream sharply marked from light color below-eye; night herons, & yellow legs. Got gas in Cuzero. Arrived foot lake Aricana about 4 p. m. Saw many vicuñor between Cuzero & Aricona. Small (1/2 mile), separate lake at foot Aricana, then narrow strip land before main lake. Camped about 1 mile above foot lalauna Lake Aricona store house & sheep corral. Sunset about 6 p. m. May 24, 1951. Sunrise on SW shore lake shortly after 6 a. m. but about 7 a. m. at our site. Took short walk along lake & decided there were no trout in it (very clear). Saw some vicuñor & huallates. Returned to trail. Caceres seen here yesterday. We drove, without trails, toward Limboni looking for good camping places. Continued down to 14500; then returned (summit Nordent 15500). East side had less snow & ice as got morning sun, & this side grayer than Cuzero side. Numerous streams & small
