May 18, 1951
To Hda. Calacala, nr. Putina,
15150 foot in rolling grassy country 6.7 miles from Poto
fobs. Much of road down was rough. Nuck under smoother
several miles before reaching Putina. Arrived at Calacala after
10 p.m. Clear cold night as usual.
May 19, 1951. Clear warm day. Wrote notes, cleaned gear,
& recovered from long drive yesterday. Dra. P. said many
waterfowl near Chupa including bandurrias, cuervos (the
glossy ibis), grebes (chocos & another). She said trout had
displaced the "Icodas" (spelling), a rich fish in the lake
which had much better meat than trout. In late afternoon

Cadete returned with his swain-law who spoke fair English.
with his help got more wildlife information.
May 20, 1951. Shot a urun, dove, & spanion & put up some.
More talk with Pardes & son-in-law. Fleshed shunk shin.
Nearly full moon. Set no traps.
May 21, 1951. Worked on car. Pardes showed us paco-victoria,
alpacas, & learingos. Clear warm day. Saw a turkey vulture
a few times. In evening viewed paco-victoria and vicunas.
Prepared to depart. Dra. Pardes gave us rock potato, rock guinea
& a whole cheese.
to nr. Asillo, Dpto. Puno, Peru
May 22, 1951 Departed with trailer about 8 9 a.m. and drove
to new Nuercaque, thence to Toraco, & took road from Senan
to Ayangaro. This road 36 mile. Soon after leaving
Senor passed lake with 100+ flamingoes. Passed close to head
of Lake Urope, comparatively deep & blue. Thus far road
poor because of mule & holes. Then climbed over hills & down
to a higher plain when road fairly good. Ayillo junction
