May 18, 1951 To Poto & Heda. Calacala, Dpto. Puno, Peru.
Drove toward Cucus to unmarked fork to Poto (about 5 miles from Cucus, 18 from summit of road). Saw occasional vicunas near the river near road toward Poto. Road ascended to 14000 feet but
slight grade; poorer than road to Limbani. Shot young tin-
Thinocerus ($10.47)
amou-like bird & saw 2 smaller young. Shot one of pair of
14000
huallatax & saw other. 19 miles from Limbani - Poto fork
(so called because sound like instrument of that name)
saw 2 of the "bandurrias" feeding on short grass flat. Had
much range brown, pink legs, dark gray wings, elier size & bill (Mrs. P. & Dr. Duffie said there said by Indians
to have many lice). 25.1 miles from fork met Sandia
road; much more traveled & in better condition than Cucus to
this point. Then saw more vicunas & geese then at on
any previous parts of this trip. About 10 miles beyond Sandia
fork took side road east for 2.6 miles to a group of old build-
ings, apparently long ago the Caserio of some locuida. Only a
few Indians there; they said road went on to a mine now little
fork (14900')
used. Returned to highway & on to road to Cananea or Poto,
this fork 15.4 miles from Sandia Fork. Drove 3 miles along well-
traveled road to small group store & houses of the village of Poto.
Bought gasoline. Drove about 4 miles up a road to a muddy
but large lake on 15500 ft. plain. About 5 flamingoes in
lake and 40+ vicunas & some geese on plain. Shot much-
grayed geese & many alpacas. Fine far view of glacier-
capped Nevado Neocuyo & others. Saw several wire casabe
along road in rock piles & walls near old mining site.
Poto turn at 15:00. Then drove back to road & to
nana
Puntina (35 miles from fork). Highest point on road was
