C. Koford 70 Journal May 17, 1951 To Aricoma, nr. Cruero, Dpto. Pung Perí veterinarian. After conversation he invited us to lunch but we refused; he lives in Orillo. He recommended Maucure as a good place to study auquénidos because all kinds including huanacos, vicus, & llamas there, good rose, & people to help in work. We drove on up gentle grade along Rio Carabaya, very clear with many trout, about 50 feet wide. 4 miles before Rosario at elev. 13350', met first vecino (14), in grassy lily country. A little beyond Rosario (road to Maucure 2 miles beyond, Mac. said to be 45 km. from Rosario) passed a fine pond with coots and red-foot gallinules (?) or young. River remained large & road good. Passed along a flat plain 3 or 4 miles wide. Cruero 17.7 miles beyond Rosario, a fair sized town with stores & plaza & many Indians. This met a on alpaca raising area. Passed large lake 5 miles beyond Cruero; this later proved to be Aricina on the road from Cruero to Limbani; lake 15000'. Saw vicuñas and huallatos there. Foot of lake had nice stream running out & was lost in short grass rolling hill area. Head of lake shutted against rocky, snow-clad, & glacier capped rugged peaks. Some cattle, sheep, & alpacas near lakes, & one habitation. Continued on to summit of road, 23 miles from Cruero. Upper part of road rust & rough in parts but would be passable to trailer. Too getting dark so drove back toward Cruero & camped at 14000 ft. near a stream. Clear cold night as usual. Lake Aricina the most striking mountain scenery we have yet encountered in Peru, but head much shodded & perpetually icy.
