La Raya, Dpto. Puno, Peru.
we were stopped there and he had little information. La Raya is high point on road to Cuzco (7314 mts). Steep grassy rocky slope on both sides, & mountain tops snow - capped. Glacier like mass of ice on or nearly peak. The man in residence said current had killed several vicunas; that foxes & rats overeat; therefore thin. He said many wild vicunas over ridge away from La R., a day's trip by horse. He said condors occasionally seen. I saw several ducks on pond. We drove back to Chiguibambilla. Santa Rosa apparently a wool center; about 100 llamas sitting town, each carrying two large sacs which appeared to be filled with wool. Near Chiguibambilla saw 20+ Andean geese in meadow near pond. Talked with the district at Chug.; rather young & seemed to know his business but handicapped for lack of funds and personnel. The goat farm had wire mesh & barbed wire fence with steel posts - best fence we have seen in Peru. The llanaja appeared run down & parts of it vacant. Land had little stock & much grass in comparison with surrounding areas. We drove on & camped just outside of Ayaviri.

Azillo had young vicunas tied in plaza. A short way toward San Anton stopped for water & met Pascual Moreno Velarquez, a well dressed
