C. Koford 66 Journal May 11, 1951 Hda. Calacala Dpto. Puno Peru (Lucho) in yard in eucalyptus tree; another flew from nearly perch. Mr. P. arranged the boy to help me set traps & to show me the "bosque" about 3 km. away. Clear sunny day; probably did not freeze last night. Shot one of 3 tuco-tuco flushed at once in tall grass near house on gentle slope; this a young of the 700 gm. bird, wt. 175 gm. but flying (discarded). Discarded 2 young Abdon badius and one 2 of small Phyllotis; put up other mice. Shot cleaned traps & found another A. badius during the day. Yesterday shot at a deer and in tree in yard & wounded it but did not recover it. Many and pellets beneath that and another eucalyptus. Set 20 snap traps on rocky hillside (vicacha area) ½ mile W. of house + 1 still trap in field below garden. Mr. Pardie gave me skin of young weasel which an indian had taken here about 2 months ago. He & bro. said there was a larger one, white below, & vinous color above him. Indians used weasels to dance with. He said he had caught that in yard about 2 years ago. May 12, 1951. Caught 1 large Phyllotis in hillside traps, small one in posture near house, same kind in live trap in garden, + 2 smaller of same in garden. Discarded last 3 (7) 2 9 gm., ♂ 21 gm., & 2 ½ gm.—brown Phyllotis with fluffy faint line on center chest (another brown 3 Phyllotis found in traps among rocks & grass on hillside before dark). Put out another steel set. Prepared specimens. In morning Pardie had his men drive many of the vicunas into stone corral with 8' high walls & he showed us some 3/4 vicuna-1/4 alpaca cross + 3/4 v. x 1/4 llama crosser. He then left for Juliaca to spend several days. So only
