C. Koford 65 Journal May 10, 1951 Heda. Calacala, nr. Pefina, Dpto. Pery. Two droppings in tall grass - the boy said "conejos". Mr. B. said they were conejos really but I saw none. She knew that as "topo" - Mr. B. said now how Dr. B. showed us a large blanket made of the hide of young vicunas and another made of hides of foyas. He claimed to have many losses from foyas & was fascinated with my steel traps. Looked at some snap traps about 8 p.m. (new moon) and found 2 Phyllotis, brown in color with long tails. Psitacius capensis came here; shot one. Dove came near houses - one with orange skin around eye, other with shot black tail. The boy showed me dried Andean goose which he had shot near houses some time ago. I saw sparrow hawks & caracaras several times during day. Pito pito was not seen but doubtless present. Saw a pair of "pituluchos" in eucalyptus near house; a kind of falco (got one May 11). It is said to eat the pitos. Dr. Baredes showed us 20+ flat skins of rodents which he had taken in looking for chinchillas. Most were of gray long-beaked rat with short tail, probably Abrocoma. One was Chinchillula. These taken in various parts, not necessarily nearby, but all in Peru. May 11, 1951. Two Phyllotis in snap traps in pasture, 2 in traps in garden, 1 A. boliviensis (min., deceased) in garden, large A. boliviensis trapped in house by Mrs. B., 1 P. + 1 A. b. in Sherman traps, & one - patus in the one steel set.
