C. Koford 67 Journal May 9, 1951 Calacola, Heda. Cota nr. Pting, Dpto. Pun, Peru. also appeared grassy. Elev. 13100 by altimeter (12500 at full- ises); possibly then 100 or 200 feet higher than Painumani. Many vicuñas in enclosure near house & others on hills above. Señores Paredes greeted us & served us refreshments until Dr. Francisco Paredes Perez arrived. All very hos- pitable, served us dinner, & offered one of a room in the house. A llama train arrived with potatoes and stacked them in a rock-floored corral with straw on top to prevent freezing. These were to be made into chuño. Talked much of vicuñas with Paredes. He also had several downward Coric oollo sheep; the vicuñas were sort of a hobby. His wife said they had seen comadrijas (weasels) here, not long ago. Francisco Paredes Perez is correct name. Dra. P. said cat here gray & black & different from those I got at Nela. Painumani, also that this was a shrub tree with one white stripe, not 2 as in my Compotus. Also the May 10, 1951. Calacola is Quechua word for rock. Paredes assigned his "chofer" to show me the vicuñas. Saw these and some alibis with llamas & alpaca. Saw 2 or 3 vicuñas on rocky hill ½ mile from the house (casero) & shot a young mole. Flushed one of the long (Nothoprocta) tinamou (700 grm.) from tall grass on slope. Set 30 snap traps, & 2 Schuyler, & 6 Sherman in garden. Set 1 steel trap near bushes & rock well where Mrs. P. said 3 young rats had been seen. Set 10 snap & 2 Schuylers in tall grass & near rock wall in pasture near house. Large passageways & rat-sized light
