C. Kofard 62 Journal May 5, 1951 To Ilave, Dpto. Puno, Peru. Group near Panimarai. Where there were road cuts between Moquegua & Ilave, always flushed a few - up to 10 - yellow finches from holes near tops of banks. May 6, 1951 Sunday To Puno & Ilica, Dpto. Puno, Peru. Snow on hills slightly above level of Ilave. Clear day. We drove to Puno. Many people in Sunday best walking toward Ilave & other towns with things to sell. Got some mail at Puno. My box of ammunition had not arrived. We drove an 45+ hrs. to Juloica. Halfway there saw 7 of the brown caracaras, probably juveniles of the black & white one, on a wood wall at edge grass field. Most of country now road flat & often wet, but some hills with rock outcroppings, rocks & stone walls. At Juloica parked truck in yard of the Clinica Americana, adventist clinic where David Duffy was he doctor. He was interested in birds especially knew many of the local birds but not their scientific names. He said that he went to Tutupasa road worked at Condorue & that it was possible to drive (named Nortes) or down to Moquegua from there. Some friends of Duffy had seen many vicunas on road from Nazca to Cuzco. To Puno, Peru May 7, 1951 Drove from Juloica to Puno to see about getting permits. Saw flock of 50+ glossy elvina at one point & 3 burrowing owls at one at another point. The "sentinela", the big plumer, in flocks of 10+. Went to Prefectura. Issued letter from prefect to officials of Dpto. Puno so as to help me get around with facility. Left passport for cwaah or carnet application. Had lunch with Mrs. Stimmer. Niteroa man who had visited Sarantoria & Equiquole. He said trip was 90+ hrs., turnoff 24 miles up Arequipa road from Puno, & that he saw vicunas & vicachas
