Cocha: Rocks here perhaps good for trapping. We poked on.
Saw no sheep but hundreds of llamas & alpacas. Saw 75 vicuñas in 5 miles beyond (toward Magocruz) bridge. Continued on until about 1 mile before the pampas of Llucta. Then crossed near 10' wide clear stream (bridge). The stream entered canyon of red rock cliffs about 100 yds. to west of road. Set 25 snap traps, 11 near old two bridges on tala & bunch grass flat (crossable) near road & stream, the other at border of rocks & tala or streamside area. Caught 1 Akodon in trap before 8 p.m. Clear cold night, calor starting 2+ hours after sunset. Camps at 13500', 20 miles from Challapalca control station.
May 2, 1951. Snap traps held 1 Akodon fulvii, 1 Phyllotis pictus, + 1 Phyllotis leuvinensis. Many llamas grazed nearby. Left traps out until 10:30 a.m. & by that time time had additional A. fulvii + 2 A. amaenus. Put up rice & departed about 1 p.m. for Neda, Caricamoni. Stopped for ½ hr. nr. Paricamoni & caught 8 trout for dinner. Found no ants at the Neda. but cor camped near the ranch buildings. On Llucta pampas saw one herd of vicuñas + a pair of Andean geese. Magocruz was +2 miles from Challapalca, 22 mile from Llucta.
May 3, 1951. Departed 8:15 a.m. from Paricamoni with peje & family, for Mt. Pata Grande. Passed at the Cantina, a few miles past Magocruz, then went to Santa Rosa (+4 (45 minutes from Magocruz). 7.3 miles or from S. R. encountered remains of mud buildings where apparently had once been mines. Encountered the grum curubias of yarata 1.3 miles further on. Arrived at a 15000ft.
