April 27, 1951
4 E. of Tarata Oto, Tacna, Peru.
mark. Son stepped into two burrows in sand, tracking
through from surface. Set 6 Sherman traps near grass
clumps + shrubs in sand & put 1 Macabee in two burrow.
Cold night but calm. Could see big dyers (Viza major)
united & a short distance above northern horizon at
Challapalca
southward toward
Chapelco a small river flows southward toward
Chile (Rios Maur?) (spelling?).
April 28, 1951. Foxes consumed remains of vizeacha 50'
from trail at night. Minimum temperature - 5°C. Took
short walk near rock slides & saw several vizcachas. Also
saw 1 vicuna 1/2 mile up canyon to east. Drove toward Tarata
Livine (nothing there) about 1 mile, elev. 15450 by altimeter. The
country became less vegetated. Descended 3 miles to a small
stream & saw 14 vicunas there. Continued on up a grade
to a 15,300' summit 10 miles from camp. Much yarta, hed
& grun, but little tula o grass. Road seemed beyond chi
point so returned to camp area to trap. In a short walk
shot 2 [illegible]. Overcast, occasional snow flakes.
April 29, 1951. Mary had 22 traps out & L 65; total catch
1 Chinchilla Chinchillula. So shot 3 vizeachas for meat &
put up one of Vizeachas not numerous here, but up the
Chinchilla. Set 2 steel traps in two burrows; Mary set
10 Macabees in two burrows. During day there was
slugging action in 4 of the burrows but animals not
caught. I set 20 additional snap & Schuyler traps,
coating with meat, and 4 single steel sets. In evening
saw about 10 vicuna 1 mile SE of camp. Light snow
