April 27, 1951 Departed 10 a.m. Snow (new) on hills at
about 14000' level, sunny & warm. Drove to Mozocruz
(to Carcino 10.4 miles from Santa Rosa). Purchased
supplies. Got gasoline near a bridge 5 miles toward
Tarato from Mozocruz. Mileage 068 at Mozocruz. Eleven
miles toward Tarato picked up dead Conepotus on road.
At mile 102 saw 2 vicuñas at about 13700' elev. in
flat area of short tola. At miles 105 saw 15+ guanai
cigis sit near rock retaining wall on lower side of
road. Many alpacas & llamas in wet meadow line,
At mile 107, about 14200' elev., saw Polylepis large
shrub growing among red rocks. Saw own 40 more vicuñas before road camping. After crossing a broad
greasy flat (about km 175 north from Taena), de-
sended slowly through a rocky area along a fine
clear stream (draining southward) and saw many
vrescales - several ran across road in front of car;
many shot one for dinner. Taena - Puno line at km.
172. Soon thereafter reached Taena control station:

They keep weather record chart of maximum + minimum
daily temperatures, wet bulb readings, + precipitation.
Drove on - and up a long grade - toward Lucini.
Camped short of summit (Lucini) at 15300' near 150th Km.
